Welcome to Year 4

Requirements and Electives for 2008-2009

Year 4 offers a wide range of options incorporating required and elective curriculum, vacation, interview time, remedial activities, research, or additional course work. These elements allow students to design programs to fit their individual career goals.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

Year 4 program offers 46 weeks scheduled from June 23, 2008 to May 9, 2009.

Students Require:

  • a minimum of 36 weeks of approved instruction to complete 84 weeks for Phase 3
  • ten weeks of the academic year are available as discretionary time
    • vacation
    • residency interviews
    • travel
    • additional electives,
    • study time for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
    • holidays
    • remediation (such as the completion of third year requirements)
  • Residency interviewing must be scheduled during discretionary time

Scheduling
A class meeting is held in the second portion of the MS-III year during which scheduling procedures and forms are explained in detail. Students are given approximately three weeks to complete the Schedule Form, obtain the faculty advisor's signature, and return the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.

Schedules are designed by the students on Schedule Forms using the calendar known as Period Codes.
Students need to design a Year 4 schedule that considers what has been accomplished or will be accomplished by the end of Year 3, using the "Period Codes" table.

Rotations:

  • All Year 4 rotations should begin at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the elective rotation
  • Conclude at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday of the final week
  • When available, directors have included instructions for the first meeting day within the elective description.

Student Evaluations:

  • Student evaluations provide faculty with feedback that can be used to improve the quality of education at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
  • Subinternship evaluation is a REQUIREMENT of the M.D. Degree Program.
